August 1, 2015Shiny Penny
It is the attraction and distraction of the newest, latest, greatest shiny object in our path.
We all seem to have an eye to spot the bright copper coin at our feet. The shine is something we just can’t pass up. We stop. We pick it up. We put it in our pocket. Then we declare our latest “find” to be lucky. A sign of great fortunes to come.
How silly it is that we give “new pennies” so much power. New pennies are charming, magical and somehow better than those “old, drab pennies”. So how long does it take us to recognize that “the shine comes off the penny?
New keeps us excited and interested while old can be dull and boring. The luster of new takes very little time to “wear off” and then we are left with what? What, then, is the real value of the “new” when compared to the “old”?
Recognize that “new” may be exciting yet “old” can be capable, consistent and reliable. This is true in relationships, business, clothes; you name it! Please take time to evaluate what you already have before you begin the search for something “new”. The prize may already be held in your hand.
“When hope is not pinned wriggling onto a shiny image or expectation, it sometimes floats forth and opens.” – Anne Lamott
