Regrets: Part of Life not Life Giving

Do you know any person who does not have some regret about their life?  I don’t know a single one and, for sure, I have a number of my own regrets.  So how do we move beyond these regrets?

Daniel Gilbert, a Harvard psychologist, wrote in his book that “people regret what they did not do more than what they did.”  Your brain “deals better with errors of courage than errors of cowardice”.  Goodness that hits you right between the eyes!  So when you think of your regrets does that hold true for you?

Nobody can live a lifetime without having some form of regret.  It is impossible to believe that one can.  People make mistakes and unhealthy decisions.  These can be devastating or can motivate us to do better.  So I wonder, how are you allowing your regrets to impact your daily life?

Consider this from Sandra Pawula:  “When you have the courage to acknowledge your errors and feel genuine regret, you have a second chance to:

  1. Learn from your past mistakes and change your behavior now.
  2. Make amends, either physical or symbolically.
  3. Pray for forgiveness and/or forgive yourself.
  4. Process the regret, make peace with the past, and let go.”

Now that is something we can all consider as we move through our lives.  Further sometimes just taking a little bit of time for self – being mindful – allows wonderful processing and cleansing to occur.  You are so worth it.  You will have regrets but do everything you can in your life to resolve each as fully as possible.
