What to do with “OLD”

Aging – the experience of growing old – is a state of mind as well as body.  Things and people both age.  How well that happens concerns each of us and particularly so in the “later years”.  So what do we do with old?

Consider the challenges of growing older:

  • Changing roles
  • Changing family patterns, friendships and social networks
  • Changing economic status
  • Changing behaviors in mind and body
  • Changing interests and opportunities

Not all of these changes will be positive.  Old age in and of itself is not disabling, but diseases which occur in old age often can be.  These issues can lead to medication concerns which can sometimes led to addiction concerns.  Be aware of this as it can be a slippery slope.  However there will also be new freedoms, experiences and rewards if you are willing to look for those things.

Growing old successfully calls for careful planning.  A realistic understanding of the changes and challenges of aging means being prepared to deal with them.  It is never too soon to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What living arrangements and lifestyle will offer me the best in comfort, convenience, independence, and companionship at a price I can afford?
  • What work and recreational activities should I pursue to keep me physically and mentally fit?
  • What organizations provide services for the aging that I should know about?
  • What medical/health services and benefits will be available to me?
  • What will retirement income be?

No less in old age than in other stages, change and challenge are all a part of life.  Plan for it – positively!
