August 29, 2014Compliance vs. Commitment
Compliance defined means: The act of complying with a wish, request, or demand; acquiescence.
Commitment defined means: The act of committing, pledging, or engaging oneself.
Are these two both necessary for one to make changes? Are these two opposites or merely work best when the two are combined?
Consider this:
- Compliance tends to decrease energy
- Compliance tends to decrease creativity
- Commitment leads to a feeling of empowerment
- Commitment leads to enthusiasm for a task
People who have choices and use their own judgment are more likely to take responsibility for tasks. In addition they will spend a longer time attempting to fully understand the task as well as the process required to complete the task. The more difficult the task the higher the level of competence felt by the individual as it enables one to “stretch” in their skill building.
Having an opportunity to be engaged in a task that has higher meaning helps to solidify both compliance and commitment. The greater the value, the more optimistic one becomes about the vision of the task.
Forward motion with a clear vision of the goal along with positive outcomes will increase the likelihood of success. The use of a timeline with significant milestones is always beneficial. Always work to be inspired and to inspire others as you move through your life. The payoff is well worth the effort.
